Local Area Facilities

Cape Reinga 90mile beach tours: Many of our visitors are interested in a 90 mile beach/Cape Reinga bus trip – we can make the arrangements for you and arrange a transfer. The bus will either pick you up or drop you off at the camp depending on which way they are going (which in itself is dependent on the tides). We arrange to get you either to the bus in the morning or home from the beach in the afternoon (again it depends on the tides!) Similarly we can recommend and book fishing guides or charters or put you in touch with local horse trekking guides.

INTERNET

We offer a complimentary 1GB of data per day per device. If you require more data it can be purchased at the camp office. There are various plans and up to 5 devices can be used on 1 plan.

SHOPPING

The camp has a small shop but doesn’t even pretend to do anymore than provide the basics, ice creams, ice, bait. However there is a very good general store about 5 kms further North. It carries an amazing range of stock including many camping, boating and fishing items. There is also an off-licence bottle store, restaurant, and take aways in the same shopping area.

RESTAURANT & TAKEAWAYS

There is a cafe in Pukenui, and Honey Bees takeaways.

There is a Cafe here at the Heads which is run separately to our business. It is closed on a Monday and Tuesday.

The fishing club is open on a Friday and Saturday night for meals.

BOAT RAMPS

As can be expected in an area famous for its fishing there are three boat ramps giving all tide access to the harbour. The nearest is right next to the camp and the next one is about 1 km further up the north road at the Houhora Game fishing club ($5 per entry through gate) and the third about 5k, further north at the Pukenui wharf.

TAVERN

No visit to the far north would be complete without at the very least a drive past the old Houhora Tavern. (no longer operating but well worth a look)

GOLF

Go about 15 km’s further north and you’ll find the country’s northern most golf club. The Houhora Golf club is an entertaining 9 hole course.

PETROL

There is a unmanned fuel pump in Pukenui at the wharf.

FISHING

The Houhora area is renowned for its fishing so it’s not surprising that one of the major buildings in the area is a fishing club. The club holds regular tournaments and there are great facilities onsite to encourage anglers to stay well into the night telling yarns about the impressive fish they almost landed. The restaurant is open on a Friday and Saturday night.
